Now, before I go too far, I have to be honest and say that our daughter cried
for a week and begged us not to buy the house. Truth be told, she
had every right to cry as it was the ugliest, most unattractive
and badly designed house you have ever seen in your life. So, why
did we buy it you ask? Well, the best example I can offer would
be like looking at an old priceless, unpolished antique. We envisioned
what it would look like and saw a diamond in the rough.
After our daughter's relentless pleading with us not to purchase
the property, she finally gave in before leaving to attend university.
We collectively agreed and bought the house. We began by redesigning
the house to take advantage of the natural flow of the Caribbean
breeze. The house sits on solid rock (a definite benefit), possibly
even the foundation of an old fort built in the time of Lord Nelson
and Admiral Barrington. As a matter of fact, we have even found
a cannon ball while digging in the garden. We'll leave it as a gift
for the new owners, so you will have your own little piece of Antiguan
history. Sorry, we have not found any buried treasure left by the
pirates of the Caribbean.
Room after room we embarked on a labor of love, redesigning and
renovating with our own personal touches, and over the last fifteen
years we continued to expand to what is now well over 3000 square
feet of comfortable living space. The property is surrounded by
lush colourful foliage, tall shady trees and palms, some of them
(like the mahogany tree) maybe at least a hundred years old. There
are also a variety of fruit trees, including bananas, papaya, and
mango. Imagine getting up each day and eating fresh fruits straight
from your own trees!
We are greeted every morning with a warm sunrise, and the cool
trade winds enter our home from all directions throughout the day
and night. But, I saved the best for last. Our favorite time of
day is of course, sunset. As the sun is going down the surrounding
light changes to various shades of gold, the sky turns to a bluish
purple and the clouds are painted in different hues of orange, pink
and yellow. This is truly one of the many things we will miss most
about our home in Antigua. We have enjoyed entertaining at our home
over the years, particularly at christmas time when close friends
and family visit and our home is turned into the North Pole. We
are big kids during this festive time of year and the design of
the house lends itself perfectly to christmas lights, decorations
and lighted lawn ornaments.
While there is no need to do much more with the house, there is
still tremendous potential for the next owner to expand or make
changes to suit their character, tastes and specific needs. In fact,
should you fall in love with our home as much as we have, and decide
to become the new owner(s), we will be happy to make any minor alterations
or changes you may require that are within reasonable cost. We understand
that not everyone has the same tastes, so should you wish to repaint
the house in your colour preference (even though it was recently
painted), or you may wish to take down a wall to expand a room or
even erect a wall to divide a room. Whatever your request, as long
as it is within reason we will be happy to accommodate you. At the
end of the day, we want you to be as happy with your purchase as
we have been living here over the years.
In closing, about one year ago we realized our need to expand our
business to Asia. It should come as no surprise that our daughter
cried for a week again. Ok, admittedly our eyes welled up a few
times when we told others we were leaving. Nevertheless, we will
leave the shores of sunny Antigua to start the next chapter of our
lives with new adventures in Asia, and many fond memories of the
wonderful people we have met here over the years. Our home is yours
now, and it's your time to enjoy a little bit of paradise.
